As a manufacturing engineer, you will be providing support to all areas of the plant, including troubleshooting of equipment and product problems. You will continually work towards process improvements throughout the facility.

A mechanical engineering degree is required, as well as 5 years of proven experience including involvement in a fast paced manufacturing environment. Additional education / experience with continuous improvement principles is a desired asset.

Responsibilities include resistance spot / resistance projection welding equipment set-up and validation, quoting and manufacturing prototype assemblies, facilitating the destructive testing of resistance welded assemblies, monitoring facility wide resistance welding quality, developing resistance welding procedures, providing internal / customer resistance weld training and documentation of quality control checks and welding procedures.

I took my smartphone out of my jacket to turn it off during a meeting. The person next to me saw it and began her mantra. “Oh, a Galaxy! … I’ve got the newer one”, she quipped, as her lips and mouth curled into a li’l girl pout, clearly feigning empathy for the fool with his now-ancient device.

I usually let this kind of stuff pass because we’re all pretty stoked when we get our new phone. And I’m just as guilty of the “I’m on the leading edge of technology … and you’re not” attitude as the next sucker. I’m convinced that the underlying reason that we act like this is because we’ve signed a veritable life time contract (more on this in the next blog) with the service provider. We just gotta brag about our “latest and greatest” phone as a rushed and poorly formed rationalization of the purchase.

When the meeting concluded, Donna (Pout Girl), having earlier noticed that my phone’s screen was bigger then her’s, asked to have a look at my device. I obliged, of course, because I knew deep down that, although older, my phone still crushes hers. Not only is my phone’s screen bigger, it also has a pen with which you can write on the gigantic, high definition, light-sensitive, auto-dimming display. So there.

As I handed her my phone, Donna’s first question was about the magic pen that writes on the screen. She didn’t seem to care about screen size, processor speed or even which version of Angry Birds I was rocking. Nope, it was all about the pen. Or the “writing thingy”.

In an effort to nudge the subject matter towards something other than the pen, I showed Donna how I could search for and display resumes and explained how this was password protected and that I was the only one with access. I noticed she had an inquisitive look on her face, leading me to think that she was fascinating by my techno talk. When I asked if she understood what I was describing, her response was, “Does the pen have a battery in it?”.

Clearly, Donna had a thing for that pen. So I pulled it out of it’s very cool, built-in cubbyhole and let her go nuts with it. For over 20 minutes. It was as if she was a cave woman who’d stumbled upon a piece of chalk that just happened to be sitting next to a smooth slab of black slate. “Me now write things” became the theme in both the real and metaphorical case.

Figuring that my phone had surpassed its 15 minutes of fame, I asked Donna if she could hand it back to me, which she did.

I had a surprise meeting the next week, with little time to prepare. All was good though, because I was armed with my champion smartphone and I was ready to take notes with my, err, writing thingy. But I encountered a problem. It seems that Donna, who was now back home in Vancouver, had forgotten to include my writing thingy when she handed the phone back to me.

My smartphone championship is now disputed, and in limbo, until UPS drops by.

P.S. There is no battery in the Samsung Galaxy Note II pen.
